Asia is enormous, its history long, its cultures rich, and its contemporary importance unquestioned. So that our youth will better understand this region and its relationship to their lives and our nation's future, the California State Board of Education mandates the study of Asia's and its evolving relationships with other peoples and places. Further, the state requires that the assessment of students include a measure of their knowledge of Asia and their ability to employ analytical and communication skills in its investigation. In addition, there is a pressing national need for teachers able to make appropriate use of emerging technologies. The U.S. Department of Education reports two million technologically literate teachers will be needed in the next decade and argue that existing teacher preparation programs cannot satisfy this demand. The UCLA Center for East Asian Studies is working with other UCLA units and several Los Angeles County school districts to develop a web-based distance learning and professional development program to train secondary school teachers in a) the state-mandated integration of Asia-related topics into the social studies and language arts curriculum and b) the use of internet technologies to further engage students in the acquisition and processing of information and in communicating the results of their research. This builds on several exemplary UCLA in-service programs including our summer institute for educators and our school-site training efforts. Drawing upon the materials developed in the workshops, tested by participants in their classrooms, and polished by professional editors and graphic designers, the project's interactive website will offer teachers and students, throughout the nation, a wide array of multimedia primary and secondary sources to support instruction and research across the curriculum.
