Now in its twelfth year, the UCLA East Asia Speakers Series organized by CEAS Director James Tong has hosted a number of distinguished government, business, and academic leaders from Asia and North America. These events, staged at UCLA and elsewhere in the Los Angeles region, are designed to foster greater understanding of the East Asian trends and events. Most of the events are open to the general public while others are restricted to invited guests. Several recent events are discussed on separate CEAS webpages. December 5, 2001 Greater China Track of the California in the Global Economy Conference. Presented as part of the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management's "Anderson Forecast. Speakers included Yoshi Inaba, President and CEO, Toyota; George Leung, Chief Economist, Hong Kong Shanghai Bank; K.Y. Tang, Chief Economist, Hong Kong SAR Bank; Po-chih Chen, Chairman, Council for Economic Planning and Development, Taiwan; Laura Cha, Deputy Chairman, Securities Regulatory Commission, China; Perng Fai-nan, President, Central Bank of China; Kenneth Courtis, VP, Goldman and Sachs for East Asia. Several of the presentations are available onlineA generous grant from Wilbur Woo (Vice Chairman, Cathay Bank) made the Greater China Track portion of the conference possible. 

November 2-4, 2001 Integrative East-West Medicine Conference: “Improving Quality of Life: Integrative Approaches to Pain and Cancer. Ka-kit Hui, conference organizer and chair. Co-sponsored with the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine. 

September 7, 2001 Presentation by Hong Kong Chief Secretary Donald Tsang. Sec. Tsang is the top ranking civil servant in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Co-sponsored with the Hong Kong Schools Alumni Federation.

July 28, 2001 Performance by Li Yundi, winner of the 2000 Frederic Chopin Competition Gold Medal, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Music Center of Los Angeles County. Co-sponsored with UMSOLA, Hanyi, Cathay Bank, and the Hong Kong Schools Alumni Federation.

July 24, 2001 Reception for Li Yundi. In addition to a brief performance by Li, the event included a performance by Zhao Hui on the qin and a presentation by UCLA International Studies Vice Provost Geoffrey Garrett.

2000-2001 Events

May 25-27, 2001 "After the End: Hong Kong Culture after 1997" included a scholarly conference organized by Shu-mei Shih, director of UCLA Comparative and Interdisciplinary Research on Asia, and a film series organized by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. CEAS and other units cosponsored the conference. Conference papers and information on the film series are available online.

April 30, 2001 "Hong Kong Since 1997: Evolution of the SAR" Christine Loh, former member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council (1992-2000) and current CEO of the think tank Civic Exchange, spoke at a seminar cosponsored with the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies. Ms. Loh writes a weekly column

March 26, 2001 "Hong Kong: Platform for Partnership" Peter Woo, chair of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, spoke to a group of business and media professionals at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel. The event was co-sponsored with the Hong Kong Association of Southern California. The text of Mr. Woo's address is available at the Trade Development Council's website.

February 16, 2001 Hong Kong and the United States: Commissioner Jacqueline Willis. As the head of the Hong Kong mission to the United States, the Honorable Ms. Willis spoke to a large group of local business, media, and education professionals on current trade and cultural relations between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the United States. Vice Provost Robert Buswell welcomed Ms. Willis. The text of Ms. Willis's address is available at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office website.

February 9, 2001 The Chinese Film Industry Top representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Film and film studios in Xi'an, Beijing, and Shanghai spoke to a group of Los Angeles media, film industry, and education professionals.  

October 13-15, 2000 "Remapping Taiwan: Histories and Cultures in the Context of Globalization" This was the fifth annual conference on Taiwan at UCLA and was organized by UCLA Comparative and Interdisciplinary Research on Asia, headed by Shu-mei Shih. CEAS and several other organizations cosponsored the event which featured presentations by scholars from three continents. The conference schedule and papers are available online.

August 22, 2000 China Religions Forum featuring a delegation of religious officials from China in discussion with local religious leaders and scholars. These religious leaders were on their way to a U.N. sponsored religious summit. China's official English language newspaper carried a number of articles on the visit:

April 20, 2000 Democracy and Human Rights in China: A Film and Panel Discussion featuring Michael Apted's Moving the Mountain and Wang Chaohua (UCLA graduate student and Tiananmen Square prodemocracy leader), Seth Faison (New York Times), Catherine Bauknight (Sipa Press), and Jim Zimmerman (Amnesty International). (Co-sponsored with Amnesty International)

April 19, 2000 Visible Traces: Rare Books and Special Collections from the National Library of China Exhibition Symposium featuring Janet Baker (Bowers Museum of Cultural Art), Philip Hu (NYU), Richard Strassberg (UCLA Dept. of East Asian Languages and Cultures), and Yang Ye (UC Riverside Dept. of Comparative Literature) Held at the Los Angeles Central Library.

November 4, 1999 Views from the Epicenter: Geological, Geotechnical, Structural Engineering and Disaster Relief Perspectives of The Taiwan Earthquake of September 21, 1999 -- symposium featuring presentations by Profs.
