These lessons are tailored to the California Social Studies/History Standards and the World History Standards developed by the National Center for History in the Schools. They have been developed in consultation with specialists on Japanese history and literature and with experienced classroom teachers.

The lessons have been grouped into units, but most would also work on their own. Each unit provides an overview of the era covered, background readings for the teacher, information about the objectives addressed, complete instructions oShizutani Schoolhouse originally built in the 17th Century (present day Bizen), famous for accepting children for classes regardless of their family's status.n implementation, and necessary handouts.   Each also includes audio-visual and bibliographic suggestions. Most include video clips to illustrate how videos could be used with students. Almost all the clips are from videos that are available to K-12 teachers free of charge.
