1890 Japan held its first general election for the Diet (under the newly promulgated Constitution).
1898 Britain's 99-year lease of the "New Territories" north of the Kowloon Peninsula went into effect. It was the expiration of this lease that caused Britain and China to agree in 1984 that in 1997 China would regain sovereignty over the whole of Hong Kong.
1902 U.S. Congress passes the First Organic Act, providing a formal colonial administrative structure for the Philippines.
1921 China's Communist Party was created in Shanghai under the leadership of Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao.
1925 Wang Jingwei was named chairman of China's Nationalist Government. Hu Hanmin was foreign minister,and Liao Zhongkai was finance minister.
1979 Oil prices jumped 30% in Japan (consequence of concerted OPEC price increases).
1987 Toshiba's chairman and president resigned because a subsidiary sold the USSR submarine propeller technology.
