1901 U.S. President William McKinley designated William Howard Taft to head the "Philippine Commission," the new civil government of the Philippines.

1903 San Francisco and Manila were linked by telegraph cable, the first transpacific link of its kind.

1904 The US began construction on the Panama Canal.

1916 Iva Kioku Toguri, the mislabeled "Tokyo Rose," was born in South Central Los Angeles.

1946 The Philippines became an independent nation for the first time in four centuries.

1974 In the Philippines, the "Parity" amendment expired.

1987 Japanese rice price supports were cut for the first time in 31 years.
