1945 US Gen. Douglas MacArthur announced that the Philippines had been liberated from Japanese occupation.
1959 Faced with regional and party faction problems, Indonesian President Sukarno shut down the assembly and took on dictatorial powers. He held effective power for the next six years.
1977 Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was overthrown by the Pakistani military under Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq.
