1884 Japan created a peerage, the House of Peers was made part of the parliament in the 1889 Constitution.
1928 The Chinese Nationalist government terminated all treaties with Western nations and Japan that it considered "unequal."
1937 The Pacific War began in earnest with a conflict between Japanese and Chinese forces outside Beijing.
1964 China shot down a US reconnaissance U-2 plane over east China.
1972 Liberal Democratic Party leader Kakuei TANAKA took over as prime minister. He served until December 1974.
