1900 Three Catholic priests, Jean-Marie Viaud (b. 1864), Edouard Agnius (b. 1874), and Jules-Joseph Bayart (b. 1877), were killed during China's Boxer Rebellion.

1921 Mongolia became the world's second socialist nation, declaring its independence from
China.

1933 In Japan, the Shimpeitai (God-sent Troops) plot among young officers against government officials was discovered and thus foiled.

1938 Japan and the Soviet Union fought in Manchuria, until 8/10.

1995 Pres. Clinton announced plans to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam.
