Today in Asian History

July 13

1869 Anti-Chinese riots broke out in San Francisco.

1964 In the on-going ideological struggle between socialist giants, China accused Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev of seeking to establish capitalist rule in the USSR.

2000 The US and Vietnam signed a landmark trade agreement.

2001 The International Olympic Committee, on its second ballot, voted to award the 2008 Summer Games to Beijing, China. It will be the first time China has hosted the Games and was viewed by the Chinese leadership and by most Chinese as demonstrating international recognition of China's economic progress and world importance. In 1992-93, the Chinese government had campaigned hard to win the 2000 Games (which were awarded to Sydney, Australia) and not getting the games was a great frustration to the leadership and many ordinary Chinese.
