1907 The Japanese compelled the Emperor of Korea to abdicate in favor of his son.
1949 Laos became an independent.
1980 The Moscow Olympics opened without the athletes from 45 nations which boycotted the games to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. China and Japan were among those nations which did not attend.
1996 The Japanese Defense Agency's annual white paper was released reflected the government's shift from worrying primarily about Russia's Far East presence to China's military buildup.
