1937 In the first weeks of the Pacific War, Japanese forces took Tianjin, a northern Chinese city.
1996 An underground nuclear test in northwest China (Lop Nor) registered 4.3 on the Richter scale.
1997 The governor of Kumamoto Prefecture declared the mercury levels in fish and shellfish from Minamata Bay were now safe for consumption.
