1943 The US ship PT 109 (under Lt. JF Kennedy) was rammed and sunk by the Japanese destroyer Amigiri.

1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, N. Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked USS Maddox and USS C. Turner Joy (Maddox sank one attacking boat and damaged two); announced by LBJ who ordered reprisal bombing of boat bases and an oil depot, 8/7 resolution passed authorizing LBJ to take action.
