1945 The first atomic bomb used on people was dropped on Hiroshima.
1964 China protested the US air strikes on North Vietnam and said the US had fabricated the Tonkin Gulf incidents. China declared aggression against North Vietnam was aggression against China.
1983 Japanese PM NAKASONE Yasuhiro reasserted the "three nuclear principles": Japan will not produce, possess, or introduce nuclear weapons.
1993 Heading an 8-party coalition, HOSOKAWA Morihiro (b. 1938, New Frontier Party leader) became the first non-Liberal Democratic Party prime minister of Japan since 1955.1995 The United States formally opened its embassy in Hanoi, capital of Vietnam. U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher spoke at a ceremony to mark the opening.
