1942 Start of the Battle of Guadalcanal, lasted until 2/7/1943.

1964 Tonkin Bay Joint Resolution, Congress ceded LBJ power to make war, drawn up two
months earlier. Sen. Morse was one of only 2 senators (there were no rep.) to oppose the
resolution: "I believe that within the next century, future generations will look with
dismay and great disappointment upon a Congress which is now about to make such a
historic mistake."

1966 North Vietnam forces shot down seven U.S. planes -- the greatest U.S. loss to that point.

1973 400 Cambodian civilians were killed in an accidental bombing by the U.S.
China's People's Daily published an article by Guangdong professor Yang Rongguo which criticized Confucius, thus launching the Criticize Confucius and Lin Biao campaign.

1982 The U.S. went to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade to complain about Japanese barriers to the importation of baseball bats.
