1863 The French reached an agreement with representatives of Norodom, Cambodia's child-king. In exchange for ensuring the security of the monarchy (against Thai and Vietnamese expansion), France received the right to exploit the country's natural
resources.
1945 Responding to a Japanese inquiry, the Allies insisted that the Japanese must surrender unconditionally and that the emperor and government would be subject to the jurisdiction of the Allied Supreme Commander.
1966 Indonesian and Malaysian officials signed an agreement formalizing the end of fighting that began in 1963 as part of an Indonesian effort to frustrate the inclusion of Brunei into Malaysia Federation.
1997 The International Monetary Fund announced that it had assembled a $16 billion loan package to bail out Thailand. Earlier in the year, the Thai government announced that it would have to assume billions of dollars in bad loans made by financial firms. Speculators, anticipating a currency devaluation, attacked the Thai baht.
