1900 The Eight Allied Powers (including the US, Japan, and major European nations) entered Beijing to suppress the anti-foreigner Boxer Rebellion.
1917 Chinese Premier Duan Jirui announced China was declaring war on Germany and Austria.
1947 Pakistan became independent of Britain, but was divided into western and eastern parts, separated by 1,600 kilometers of Indian territory. In 1971, East Pakistan -- with Indian support -- won its independence, creating Bangladesh.
