Compiled Oct. 17, 2001
APEC began in November 1989 with 12 members. Today, the organization has 21 member states or regions. The 2001 summit meeting is being held in Shanghai, China October 17-21. Below are a variety of websites with information about the organization and this year's meeting. The first group of sites are those of the organization's executive office and the host country. The second group includes news organizations and the third group includes official sites of member economies. The fourth group consists of APEC sub-organizations.

APEC Secretariat

The organization's own website presents information about the body as well as economic data and forecasts for member nations. The Q and A page offers a basic primer on the organization.

APEC China 2001

This is the Chinese government's website for the 2001 conference. The site offers a webcast (requiring Realplayer), the text of addresses, photos, declarations from past meetings, and news about Shanghai (the host city).

Brunei hosted the 2000 APEC meeting and the official meeting website.

Canada Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade

A variety of resources are available from this site, including information on how the body benefits Canada. Teachers should note the "Pacific Rim Profiles" that have been developed for school use. They can be downloaded in .pdf format.

Hong Kong Government Information Centre

The website offers press releases and the text of addresses by the chief executive, finance secretary and others.

Chinese version of the above site.

Indonesia Department of Foreign Affairs

Nothing here about the APEC meeting. The Indonesian language Indonesia Ministry of Finance website may have something.

Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs -- APEC 2001

The APEC 2001 page has limited information, but the Ministry's APEC site has links to presentations made by Japanese leaders at past gatherings.

Malaysia Ministry of Foreign Affairs -- APEC

Not much is available here about Malaysia and APEC. The policy introduction page was last updated in 1999.

Mexico Ministry of Foreign Affairs - ¿Que es APEC?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page offers only the most basic of information. Mexico will host the APEC finance ministers' meeting in 2002. When this page was being prepared, the Finance Ministry website did not have any information about the 2001 meeting.

New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs -- APEC

Not recently updated, but it has interesting reports on topics such as "Towards an APEC food system."

Peru Ministry of Economics and Finance

A flashy website which has a section devoted to APEC, including information about which APEC nations (and companies) have invested the most in Peru.

Philippines Ministry of Finance || Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs

Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The English portion of the Ministry's website had nothing on the 2001 APEC meeting. The top news item provided was a speech by Pres. Putin in November 2000. As it happens, it was entitled "Russian New Oriental Prospects."

Singapore Ministry of Finance

Although Singapore is home to the APEC secretariat, the city-state's governmental websites have little about the Shanghai meeting. There is, however, a copy of the Minister of Finance's speech to the September 2001 meeting of APEC finance ministers in Suzhou.

South Korea Ministry of Foreign Affairs -- 13th APEC Ministerial Meeting

A fairly static presentation, but there are links about Pres. Kim Dae-jung's speech at the meeting.

Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) APEC Study Center

APEC is an organization of "economies" rather than states, so Taiwan (and Hong Kong) are permitted to participate. The website offers basic information about the other members, including key imports and exports.

Chinese version of the above page.

US Department of State: The United States and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation

The site offers full text transcripts of APEC-related speeches made by US officials, copies of joint declarations from previous meetings, position papers (e.g., "Why APEC Matters to Americans"), and photos from the forum.

Chinese version of the above website.

APEC Competition Policy and Law Database

This Taiwan-based project has a comprehensive database of where member nations stand on key issues, including what legal procedures are in place to resolve disputes.

Based at the University of Washington in Seattle, the network aims to monitor diseases and to share information. The strongest part of the website is archive of the biweekly newsletter.

APEC Tariff Database

This site requires users to register, but then provides free access to tariff schedules for APEC members.

APEC Telecommunications Working Group

This APEC body met in September, 2001 in Jeju, South Korea. Information is available about e-Security and other discussions.

APEC Virtual Center for Environmental Technology

The Center was created at the 1995APEC meeting in Osaka, Japan. The website offers many reports on environmental trends.

Japanese version of the above website.
